Val Kilmer’s ‘Willow’ cameo scrapped due to COVID

Showrunner Jonathan Kasdan isn’t ruling out a cameo from Kilmer if the series is renewed for a second season.

Val Kilmer wowed fans with his Top Gun: Maverick cameo earlier this year, but he was close to doing it again Another one of his beloved roles in the 1980s in 2022. In addition to his return to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor program, he almost returned to the fantasy world of “Willow.”

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Willow showrunner Jonathan Kasdan revealed that Kilmer was close to reprising his role as Madmartigan in the Disney+ series.

“We really wanted Val to be in the show,” Kasdan said. “And Val really wanted to come out and be on the show. I remember going up to Val right after this thing got off the ground and I said, ‘Look, we’re going to do this. And the whole world wants Madmartigan back.’ And he said, ‘Not as much as me.’”

With Kilmer on board, Kasdan and his creative team got to work to come up with a story that would allow him to perform.

“We started building the first season with the intention of having him perform,” he said, adding that the team thought Kilmer would “be on the show until quite late in the process, frankly.”

Kasdan explained that Kilmer ultimately had to withdraw from the show due to concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As COVID overtook the world, it became insurmountable,” he said. “We prepared in the spring of the year for it to happen the most. And Val reluctantly felt he couldn’t get out. We had to find a way to preserve the story we wanted to tell with him about how his story unfolded.”

But don’t count on the possibility of seeing Madmartigan again later. Though the show hasn’t been renewed for a second season, Kasdan hopes they’ll find another opportunity to cast Kilmer as the series continues.

“We wanted to leave the door open to all possibilities in the future and also honor his spirit,” Kasdan said. “We tried to do that and work with him in a way that you can feel and hear him, if not see him.”

The first two episodes of Willow are now streaming on Disney+.
