It’s been three seasons since Colin Donnell’s Dr. Connor Rhodes checked out Chicago Medand during that time, many other doctors and nurses have been in and out of the Windy City Hospital. But some have found their backs, like Dr. Jessy Schram’s Hannah Asher and Yaya DaCosta’s April Sexton, leading TVLine to ask showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider if they ever thought of bringing back fan-favorite Connor.
“I don’t think you can ever rule that out,” Frolov said, adding that the idea was discussed in the writers’ room. Schneider added: “Colin was a guy we enjoyed working with. He’s been a very strong member of the cast for a long time and we’d love to see him again.”
So would Donnell be willing to reprise his role? “I loved my time Chicago Medand I loved Andy and Diane,” the actor said while promoting his upcoming Peacock series Disrespectful (Premiering November 30). “I loved our crew so much, the cast was so wonderful, and I know they’ve had a lot of comings and goings since I left myself. But yes, why ever close a door?”
“I had such a great time, and not only do I have such a fondness for the entire universe of Chicago shows, but I love the city of Chicago itself so much,” Donnell continues. “If it ever knocks, let’s see if the schedules work. It would be fun to visit this guy again.”
When Donnell last appeared in the season 5 premiere on the NBC drama, Connor’s ex-girlfriend Ava admitted to killing Connor’s father for her and then slits her throat in front of his eyes. After failing to save Ava’s life, Connor decided he needed a fresh start somewhere far away from this tragedy. At the time, Frolov and Schneider told TVLine that Connor probably took a job at the Mayo Clinic, but Donnell suspects his character may not be there anymore.
“I feel like Connor was never one to stay in one place for too long. There’s a bit of wanderlust in him,” Donnell shares.
That would certainly suit Connor, who viewers first met in the series premiere and who seemed haunted when he was hospitalized after a stint abroad. “That was the great thing about bringing this character in at all: once you’ve come back home and found a place to embrace again, there’s a lot to explore there. I think there’s still some research to be done if they decide to do it,” says Donnell.
Looking back on his dramatic final episode, Donnell believes the writers “handled it very well.”
“I thought it would be a brave ending, which I always think is a great option when you leave a show and it’s not going to be the death of that particular character,” says Donnell. “Of course there was a fatality involved in the exit. But I think it was a big step that he went on his own terms and made the decision for himself and took some responsibility for his life, which we explored over the seasons… And I think they did a good job of really saying, ‘All right, that’s what I have to do for myself.’ His focus at the time was to really take care of himself and to do that he needed to take off.”
