Chicago Med Vet Colin Donnell is back in the Windy City in Peacock’s darkly comedic new series Disrespectful (Premiering this Wednesday), but it’s not long before an unsettling twist takes him to a strange town Down Under.
Donnell plays Paulo, a criminal broker who finds himself in a dangerous situation that requires him to escape from Chicago. On his flight Paulo meets Reverend Mackenzie Boyd (The young‘ PJ Byrne) going through his own crisis. After a series of unusual events, Paulo is forced to pose as Reverend Mack and join the small Australian reef community, Clump, awaiting the arrival of their new Reverend.
“I think the easiest way to describe Paulo/Mack is that he’s everything he needs to be in front of whoever he’s in front of,” Donnell previews in the video interview above. “So he’s like this chameleon that adapts to whatever scenario he’s in and he has so much charisma and street smarts and the ability to transform really serves him well, especially given all the drama, in which he finds himself.”
Paulo Yes, really must adjust to his circumstances when he ends up in Clump and has no choice but to oversee his eccentric new flock.
“Not only is he in a new place he’s never been, on the other side of the world from where he started, [but] he embodies a person and a job he knows next to nothing about,” shares Donnell. “And he’s surrounded by probably the most colorful cast in the world he could fall into. He’s really just trying to do his best to survive.”
The quirky townsfolk of Clump are equally stunned by their unconventional (and handsome) new reverend, who “isn’t quite what they hoped would show up on their doorstep,” says Donnell. “In the end it’s exactly what’s needed right now because he really needs to disappear and not be on the radar of the people who are tracking him. But it’s just confusion on both sides. He doesn’t know what to make of them, and they certainly don’t know what to make of this guy who’s supposed to be a devout minister in their church.”
Plus there’s the challenges of its new remote location, which doesn’t allow for easy access to cellphone and internet services – traumatic flashback warning: there’s a dial-up modem – but does Give Donnell plenty of chances to show his comedic side after playing dramatic roles Chicago Med, Arrow and The affair.
“They really let me go with it. The scripts were really, really funny, and that was one of the things I loved most about reading it,” says Donnell, adding that the writers “really with the way it was funny , wanted to push the envelope Accept the absurdity of the situation. I think that’s one of the things I’m most looking forward to for the audience, when I can actually do something that I haven’t had the opportunity to do on TV before.”
