Video: Grant Gustin talks about the ending of The Flash series finale

Grant Gustin had a lot to say — and share — during his visit to TVLine’s New York office where he thought about it The Lightning‘s nine-season run and teased recent episodes.

In Part 1 of our video series with Gustin, The Lightning‘s frontman first sheds light on the Instagram video he posted saying goodbye to his speedster suit. Was he as emotional about the moment as it sounded?

Then about two minutes later we talk about whether it was easier to bid The Lightning Farewell, knowing that the Arrowverse isn’t as busy as it used to be during its four- and five-show heyday. “I hadn’t thought about it…” he replies, “but maybe in a way did make it a little easier on yourself, knowing that the party won’t continue without us. It’s like, ‘We’re closing this place.’”

After then rattling off some of his favorite guest stars of all time, Gustin admits there was a “strange period” when Barry and his wife Iris (played by Candice Patton) spent a lot of time apart. But for Season 9, showrunner Eric Wallace stated that #WestAllen would work together, as the series neared its end. With that in mind, Gustin recounts how he was clearly told a bedroom was being built for WestAllen, so “we knew to go in”.

After about six minutes, Gustin talks about some of the announced returnees, including original actor Rick Cosnett, who “blew my mind,” he says. “He had to do some really interesting stuff, unlike anything he’s done before on our show.”

Gustin then teases this season’s eighth episode, titled “Partners in Time,” which airs April 5, and says the sitcom-esque bottle episode is one of his favorite outings of the season. (Watch out for exclusive footage!)

The Q&A video ends with Gustin providing an overview of the final episodes of the season, saying, “I really appreciate how consciously they tried to book some important things from Season 1,” adding, “[Eric Wallace] did a really good job incorporating some of our most classic storylines from this season.”

He wraps up that thought, revealing which specific guest star/material from the series finale “kind of caught me off guard” and made him “emotional” in that final hour.

Stay tuned for more TVLine videos with Gustin, where he says a few heartfelt words about each original cast member… teasing Stephen Amell’s return as Oliver… and entertainingly answering many (great) reader questions.
