Video shows a Russian “Alligator” helicopter falling from the sky after an attack on Ukraine

The moment a Russian Ka-52 “Alligator” helicopter was shot down by Ukraine was caught on video and provides a glimpse of one of Russia’s most recent losses in the ongoing war.

The video was shared on Twitter by Ukraine’s Defense Ministry, which said the Ukrainian National Guard shot down the plane using an Igla Man-Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS). The helicopter flies in the distance just before being hit, then continues flying a short distance before crashing to the ground in a wall of smoke.

Although the Defense Ministry did not specify when and where the Ka-52 was destroyed, Ukraine’s National Guard said it was shot down on the Zaporizhia front on Thursday, Ukraine’s online newspaper Ukrainska Pravda reported.

The list of Russian equipment that Ukraine said was either destroyed or lost in the ongoing war, as well as the Russian death toll, has been building since the conflict began on February 24. In its latest estimate released Thursday, Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said more than 2,200 Russian tanks, 4,700 armored fighting vehicles, 253 military jets and 218 helicopters were eliminated. The losses were not confirmed by Russia.

Thursday’s Ukrainian update says 55,510 Russian soldiers have been killed since the war began, although Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced a much lower figure of 5,937 Russian soldiers on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

Ukrainian forces have also reportedly come across dozens of pieces of equipment left behind by the Russian army fleeing a counter-offensive in the eastern Kharkiv region.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry said on Sunday it had found one of Russia’s most advanced tanks, the T-90M, abandoned in the area in “perfect condition”. Last week, Ukraine’s Security Service shared photos on social media allegedly showing “munitions arsenals” left behind by Russians in Kharkiv.

“We know what to do with them and we will definitely use them for their intended purpose – against the enemy,” the service said of the supplies.

According to Airforce-technology.com, the Ka-52 “Alligator” is an all-weather attack helicopter of the Russian Air Force. It is a two-seat version of the single-seat Ka-50.

According to Ukraine, Russia has lost several Ka-52 helicopters in recent months.

The Air Force Command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces said last month that bomber planes shot down a Ka-52 and three Russian UAVs. Earlier this month, Ukraine’s Air Force Command said another “Alligator” helicopter was destroyed, the same day Ukraine’s Defense Ministry announced that 23 tanks, 33 armored fighting vehicles and 24 artillery systems had also been eliminated.

news week has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry for comment.
