Vin Diesel Isn’t Starring In “Avatar” Movies Despite Rumors

“He came in, visited the set one day to see what we were doing and people took it out of context,” said the producer of Avatar: The Way of Water.

The rumor mill ran too fast, too furiously for “Avatar” fans.

After Vin Diesel enraged Avatar audiences with a 2019 Instagram video starring James Cameron, Avatar: The Way of Water producer Jon Landau shut down claims that Diesel was ever approached as the lead.

“Vin was a fan,” Jon Landau told Empire magazine. “He came in, visited the set one day to see what we were doing and people took that out of context.”

In the video, Diesel teased along with Cameron that “there’s one person in Hollywood that I’ve always wanted to work with and learn from, and so I think all things come to those who wait.” Diesel, however, is will not appear in The Way of Water and will instead next appear on screen in Fast and Furious episode Fast X.

Meanwhile, Avatar writer-director Cameron confirmed that more sequels are on the way.

“It looks like with the momentum the movie has now, we’ll easily break even over the next few days, so it looks like I can’t wriggle out – I’ll have to do these other sequels.” , Cameron said during HBO’s “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” (via the Hollywood Reporter). “I know what I’m going to do for the next six or seven years. The point is, we’ll be fine. I’m sure we’ll soon be discussing the next game plan for Avatar 3 with the top folks at Disney, which is already in the can – we’ve already filmed and photographed the entire film, so we’re in of advanced post-production to do all that CG magic. And then both “Avatar 4” and “5” are written. We even have some of ‘4’ in the can. We started a franchise at this point. We have started a saga that can now span multiple films.”

So could Diesel show up in one of the many follow-ups? Cameron previously teased that Matt Damon could join the Avatar cinematic universe over a decade after the Bourne Identity actor turned down the lead role in the 2009 feature (the role eventually went to Sam Worthington).

“We have to do it,” Cameron said of casting Damon. “We have to do it to put the world back in balance.”
