A key sequence in the latest episode of Disney+ Andor has left some fans debating whether it was actually stealth flashbackand Not an update on the whereabouts of the title character.
On the October 19 episode of the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Prequel series, Cassian returned to Ferrix after the Aldhani raid to kidnap his mother Maarva and the droid B2EMO to a better life away from the Stormtroopers now patrolling the Rix Road. Maarva, however, reiterated her desire to remain in place, inflamed as she has been by the rebels’ bold actions on Aldhani.
The scene then shifted to the ISB, where supervisor Dedra Meero received well-deserved praise from Major Partagaz for her collection of hard data that indicated a growing rebel effort.
We then took one harrowing Excursion to the seaside resort of Niamos, via a lazy coastal flyover accompanied by a heavy bop. There we found Cassian (aka “Keef Girgo”) in the company of a new (or former?) friend. Moments later, on his way to a store, he was arrested by an overzealous coastguard and eventually sentenced to six years in prison on charges that would normally require six years Months.
That hefty prison sentence – knowing that Andor Season 1 only spans one year, while the series spans a total of five years – is a possible indication we’ve seen one flashback, and that the Cassian we met in the first episode had already dismounted this time. (“Clem” had told Skeen in Episode 5 that he served three years at a youth center but joined when he was 13.)
On the other hand… the made-up sentence seems to speak more clearly to the bills that General Yularen just told us Palpatine had rushed through, some of which even consider an “indirectly related criminal act” to be a Class 1 offence. The Shoretrooper’s paranoia, who accuses the barely furtive Cass of “being a part of it,” also supports the “Not a flashback” POV.
However… as TVLine reader MBWilson noted as “Keef” washes up in the Niamos hotel room, “note that he has no wound or scar on his left arm, although he was wounded just before Aldhani.”
Or… can the flawless left arm be attributed to the fact that a few thousand credits can probably get you decent plastic surgery in a galaxy far, far away to hide a revealing scar?
What isn’t made clear, when the action switches from the ISB to Niamos, the episode’s audio descriptor says “Elsewhere…” which could indicate a simultaneous event, although “In the meantime…”. would have been more on the nose. Later, as a prelude to Cassian’s sentencing, the audio descriptor says, “Now…” as it turns to Syril’s story. In contrast to “back then” maybe? Saying we’re “back in the present” after a flashback?
That Cassian was even at a lavish resort strongly suggests this was after the raid, having left Maarva on Ferrix. Previous episodes told us he barely had two nickels to rub against one another and regularly stiffened Bix and Ferrix’s local loan shark. How could the same guy afford the resort and his needy girlfriend?
Besides, if Andor “surprised” us with an a. This is us-style, stealth flashback, wouldn’t the sequence/episode make that crystal clear before it went black? Leaving us with that crucial “A-ha!” moment?
Me? I think that was Not one flashback, and this “Keef” will somehow escape from prison – perhaps by Vel, with plans then to end Luthen’s loose end. And if he’s serving around nine months for the first time, that would help push the narrative deeper into the one year that Season 1 will span.
where to do she Was standing? Did you think Niamos was a flashback? Or was it definitely hired after Cass left Ferrix? While you think, I’ll leave you with this Niamos bop:
Another great episode of #Andor . The show does such an excellent job of making the Empire feel like an actual looming threat.
Niamos is also one of my favorite planets from Star Wars. pic.twitter.com/8qdZ1RbBS2
