WATCH: Large crowds gather to witness Manhattanhenge on Memorial Day

MANHATTAN, NY (WFLA) — Large crowds flocked to the Big Apple on Memorial Day to witness a beautiful solar event.

Hundreds of people took to the streets of Manhattan on Monday to witness the spectacular “Manhattanhenge Effect.”

According to the American Museum of Natural HistoryHowever, the effect only occurs twice a year – towards the end of May and around mid-July. During this time the “sun appears between the latticework of the city, as it stands low in the sky and sets.”

As the sun sets between the city’s buildings, the glow creates a picture-perfect moment that many wait all year to capture.
