“I don’t like sand. It’s gross and rough and irritating, and it gets everywhere. Not like here. Everything is soft and smooth here.”
This dialogue is about as infamous as our favorite galaxy far, far away has ever seen, and let’s face it — it’s not Shakespearean. Voiced by Anakin Skywalker in attack of the Clone warriorsfor more than two decades, war of stars Fans pressed their foreheads together on this song.
It’s true that The Phantom Menace, attack of the Clone warriorsand Vengeance of the Sith Wines have aged surprisingly well over the years, and while ripe for criticism in their day — after a string of less-than-stellar Lucasfilm projects, George Lucas’s sequel to his sci-fi saga seems damn good by comparison.
The debate on the subject never seems to stop, and finally one fan had the courage to speak his mind. In a wild turn of events, someone out there is actually defending Anakin’s “I hate sand” remark. Take it easy, her analysis is about as long as an Imperial Star Destroyer.
We won’t even try to argue. Honestly, the attention to detail and depth present in a hot take like this is enough to sway us — even if the line is kind of irrevocable. A more cerebral approach means we can all at least see what George Lucas was up to, right? We can almost hear the prequel haters disagree. “As if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and suddenly fell silent.”
As mentioned above, Anakin’s dislike can be fully attributed to his childhood on Tatooine and stands in symbolic contrast to Padme’s experience with Sand. Viewed through a narrative lens, this chunky line becomes a pretty brilliant comparison – all things considered.
Another fan decides, honestly, can anyone even tell what’s good or what’s bad?
Based on that, someone else chooses a very different line of criticism.
Regardless of how you personally feel about sand, forbidden kisses, etc war of stars on the whole – be thankful there’s a fandom out there passionate enough to dig this deep with each other. There’s something for everyone out there among the stars, and as long as Disney is ready to tell a great story, we’ll always be happy to take a trip back to one of our favorite franchises.
