The Scripps National Spelling Bee returns this year for the first all-in-person competition since 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic began.
The competition, taking place Tuesday, May 31 through Thursday, June 2, at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center outside of Washington, DC, welcomes 234 of the brightest book writers, ages 7 to 15, from across the country from the Bahamas, Canada, Germany and Ghana.
The preliminary rounds will take place on May 31st, the quarterfinals and semifinals on June 1st and the final on June 2nd will be televised. But what prizes are up for grabs this year?
The Scripps National Spelling Bee Awards 2022
All 234 participants will receive a prize pack of bee souvenirs and an official Scripps National Spelling Bee Certificate of Participation.
All spellers will also receive prizes from the competition’s sponsors. All participants will receive a one-year subscription to Merriam-Webster Unabridged Online from Merriam-Webster and a one-year subscription to Britannica Online Premium from Encyclopædia Britannica.
Jay Sugarman, Chairman and CEO of iStar Financial, will also provide a 2022 United States Mint Proof Set in honor of his father, Samuel Louis Sugarman.
Those who make it to the quarterfinals of the competition will receive a commemorative pin and a $100 gift card, while semi-finalists will receive a commemorative medal and a $500 gift card.
2022 Scripps National Spelling Bee finalists will also receive a commemorative medal. Sixth place in the competition will receive a cash prize of $2,500, fifth place will receive $5,000, fourth place will receive $10,000, third place will receive $15,000 and second place will receive $15,000 and $25,000.
This year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee Champion will receive a cash prize of $50,000, a commemorative medal and the Scripps Cup, the official championship trophy of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Prize sponsor Merriam-Webster will provide the final winner with a cash prize of $2,500 and a reference library, while Encyclopædia Britannica will provide $400 worth of reference works, including a replica set of the 1768 Encyclopædia Britannica and a three-year one Membership in Britannica Online Premium.
The school and champion’s sponsor will also receive engraved plaques from the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
This year’s entrants include 45 who have previously competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, including four who were finalists last year and three who placed fourth.
Scripps will be broadcasting the competition on its own networks ION and Bounce this year.
