What happened to Buffalo Bills’ Damar Hamlin? The doctor explains the player’s chest injury

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Bill’s safety Damar Hamlin is in critical condition after collapsing on the field Monday night, the NFL said, and Buffalo’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals has been suspended.

Hamlin was administered CPR on the field, ESPN reported, and he was surrounded by teammates, some of whom broke down in tears, after he was injured when he tackled Bengals receiver Tee Higgins.

dr Anthony Cardillo, ER specialist and CEO of Mend Urgent Care, shared what he saw while investigating the hit and how Hamlin reacted to it.

“What we can say is that the event was most likely secondary to that hit,” Cardillo said.

Discussing the injury, Cardillo mentioned the “R-on-T” phenomenon and explained:

“This is a phenomenon that occurs when the heart alternates between its beats, when the heart depolarizes and then repolarizes, when you have traumatic trauma in the chest, at a very specific moment, the heart is repolarizing itself, you’re in one can go fatal ventricular arrhythmia, and that’s what it looks like,” Cardillo said.

Hamlin spent five years in college in Pittsburgh — his hometown — appearing in 48 games for the Panthers during that span. As a senior, he was a second-team All-ACC player, was elected team captain, and was selected to the Senior Bowl.

He was drafted in the sixth round by the Bills in 2021, played in 14 games as a rookie and became a starter this year after losing Micah Hyde for the season through injury.

As of late Monday night, a community toy drive organized by Hamlin had raised more than $900,000 in donations. His stated goal was $2,500.
