Everyone has their most hated song that if they stopped it ever existing they wouldn’t have to think twice about zipping it from the universe.
Redditor u/themoonisgoneforever – who took their name from another song, “On Top of the World” by Boys Like Girls – went to the popular forum r/AskReddit and received 17,900 upvotes and 23,700 comments for their post “What song annoes you every when do you hear it?”
The songs listed range from irritating commercial jingles, repetitive country songs, and cuts that go viral on TikTok, but what makes a song annoying? Curious about it, artists Komar and Melamid collaborated with composer Dave Soldier and lyricist Nina Mankin in 1997 on what they dubbed The Most Unwanted Song.
Building on Komar and Melamid’s earlier work on the most unwanted painting, Soldier built his idea on a broad musical taste survey, asking 500 people what they wanted to hear most in a song—and what they least wanted. The survey included subjects, genres, instruments, length, and other metrics.
“The Most Unwanted Song” ended in a 22-minute monstrosity that jumped haphazardly between genres and featured elements as diverse as a children’s choir singing Walmart holiday-themed jingles, bagpipes, a cowboy-style operatic rap, and more, combined. The song contained casual use of profanity, what Mankin called “intellectual content,” political catchphrases like “pig barrels” and “special interests,” a verse in German, and a voice accusing the listener of “murdering all the innocent children.” . “
While none of the songs listed by Redditors were as irritating as the work of Komar, Melamid, Soldier, and Mankin, elements of that can be found in almost all of the suggestions.
The top rated suggestion came from u/this_is_too_goo, who received 20,600 upvotes for The Shangri-Las’ suggestion “Remember (Walking In the Sand)” even though they described it as “Oh no…oh no…oh no no.” , no, dunno what it’s called, but everyone hates it I think.”
The 1964 hit – which is also Billy Joel’s first appearance on record, playing piano on the cut – recently became a viral tune on TikTok and was sampled by Capone for his song “Oh No.”
“I run on sunshine: I used to work at a summer camp and they would play it repeatedly for about 5-6 minutes every morning for the campers to come in,” suggested u/big_cheesee, referencing the 1983 Katrina and the waves hit. “I don’t know why they decided to continue inflicting this psychological trauma on everyone, but it’s been with me for over 15 years.”
Pharrell’s “Happy” was another frequent song appearing in the thread, with u/msnyder87 saying the song always had the opposite effect on them: “OK! Redditor u/rdickeyvii suggested pretending to listen to the “Weird Al” Yankovic version “Tacky” instead.
“All About That Bass for me. It’s not even that I hate the lyrics, but whoever designed the instrumental completely forgot to even add any bass to the song. Annoys me more than anything,” u/tirosey124 said of Meghan Trainor’s tune.
The viral children’s song “Baby Shark” was another contender, with over 100 people voicing hatred for the cut.
Country music also made a couple of appearances on the list.
“That country-pop song that keeps repeating, ‘If it’s meant to be this way, then it’s meant to be this way, ride with me ride with me ride with me ride with me ride with me.’ Nothing is more annoying than a song that hits the top of the charts, probably written in less than 3 minutes, with a repeating chorus that goes on forever,” wrote u/unbiasedasian of Bebe Rexha and Florida Georgia’s “Meant to Be.” lines.
“Fancy Like” by Walker Hayes, famous for appearing in Applebee’s commercial, also appeared on the list.
“The moment I realized that this is a real song someone put on an album… I was speechless. I really thought it was just an Applebee ad,” u/5hrs4hrs3hrs2hrs1mor wrote.
“Literally the worst song in the world. I can’t believe it made it to radio considering the number of people something has to go through to get on radio. For example, are we being cheated by the music industry? Were we bad? Because this song is a punishment,” added u/SurferRosa85.
Speaking of commercials, other users were calling out common jingles.
“That stupid Liberty Mutual jingle, if that counts,” wrote u/ofthisredearth.
“Yeah, it’s not ‘We are farmers dum da-dum da-dum da-dum’,” u/Tokasmoka420 agreed.
“JG WENTWORTH!!! NOW 877-CASH!” u/meldiane81 suggested.
“But the opera version is fire,” replied u/throwawaykarl.
