Where was the Sycamore Gap tree?
The 70-foot-tall Sycamore Gap tree was located along Hadrian’s Wall.
It stood near Crag Lough in Northumberland and could be found in a dramatic hollow, with the Roman Milecastle 39, known as Castle Nick, just to the left.
The tree, which inspired its own beer at nearby Twice Brewed Inn, has been described as one of the most photographed in the country and was named Tree of the Year in 2016.

On September 28, 2023, it was reported that the world-famous tree had been felled by a mysterious vandal.
It is believed that the tree was felled intentionally.
The public has since been asked not to visit the highly recognizable landmark until the details of the incident are clarified and to ensure the safety of the site.
A spokesman for the Northumberland National Park Authority said: “We can unfortunately confirm that the iconic tree at Sycamore Gap fell overnight.”
“We have reason to believe that it was felled intentionally.
“It is currently not clear whether the tree fell victim to Storm Agnes or whether it was a deliberate act – however images suggest a clean and straight cut.”
“We are working with relevant agencies and partners interested in this iconic North East landmark and will release further details as they become available.”
“Sycamore Gap was voted English Tree of the Year at the Woodland Trust Awards in 2016 and is much loved by people around the world.
“The Northumberland National Park Authority would like to ask the public not to visit the site at this time while we work with our partners to find out what happened and make the site safe.”
Northumbria Police have now launched a full investigation and are carrying out a series of inquiries “to establish whether any offenses have been committed”.
