Whitlock: Any American who doesn’t protect freedom of speech is a traitor

A month ago, the Brooklyn Nets suspended one of their biggest stars, Kyrie Irving, for repeatedly failing to properly apologize for tweeting a picture of a documentary poster.

According to the Anti-Defamation League, the NAACP, Charles Barkley, Shannon Sharpe, Stephen A. Smith, Ben Shapiro, and countless other establishment supporters, black Hebrew Israelites, and supporters of the documentary Hebrews to Negroes pose such a threat to Jews that Irving and rapper Kanye West are worth getting off the platform and silencing.

It doesn’t matter that nobody has seen the three-hour, 30-minute documentary. Never mind that most people have no idea what black Hebrew Israelites believe. Never mind that virtually none of Irving’s critics called for Amazon to be penalized for hosting and selling the “anti-Semitic” documentary.

Free speech — the First Amendment — has so little real support in our social media-controlled culture that few Americans care about protecting unpopular and misguided speech. Corporate media want to rewrite the US Constitution. A hypothetical new First Amendment would guarantee the right of the corporate media to censor any speech it deems “misinformation.”

You know, things like criticism of experimental medical studies being touted as bulletproof vaccines.

“Hebrews to Negroes” is disinformation that we must keep from the impressionable eyes and ears of the American public. That’s why no one interviewed Ronald Dalton Jr., the documentary’s producer and the author of the book it’s based on. That’s why thousands of black Hebrew Israelites were able to surround Barclays Center ten days ago when Irving returned to court and no one in the mainstream media attempted to interview the leader – Bishop Nathanyel of Israel United in Christ – who was the organized a massive demonstration of support for Irving.

The American establishment is desperate to control what the citizens of this country think, hear and believe. This desperation is unprecedented in American history. It signals how far and how fast we have come from America’s appreciation of free speech and independent thought.

I remember a time when Ronald Dalton and Bishop Nathanyel were coveted guests on America’s most popular talk shows. Phil Donahue, Oprah Winfrey’s talk show father, built a massive following in the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s by interviewing America’s most controversial, polarizing, persuasive, and misguided thinkers.

He featured Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, KKK Grand Wizard David Duke, anti-feminist author Shahrazad Ali and so many more. He hosted shows discussing and investigating whether Jesus was black.

We used to really believe in freedom of expression. The American Civil Liberties Union used to protect freedom of speech.

Now the freedom fighters are fighting for censorship. Establishment elites believe they can determine who should be heard and what opinions are worth hearing. That’s why there is so much dismay at Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter and reinstatement of Donald Trump’s Twitter feed.

And that’s why the establishment hatched the term “hate speech.”

doesn’t hate language. language expresses. In a free society, speech must be free and able to express what it wants.

The supposedly well-intentioned attack on “hate speech” is just another orchestrated attack on America’s founding documents and the rights of all Americans. It’s all a violation of the First Amendment. Included in this attack is an attempt to define any criticism of the Jewish people as anti-Semitism.

In 2019, then-President Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis took action to “fight” anti-Semitism. Trump signed an executive order to ban anti-Semitism on university campuses. DeSantis signed a Florida law – CS/CS/HB 741 – to curb anti-Semitism. Trump’s executive order and Florida’s legislation were based on the International Holocaust Rememberance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism. The definition includes these examples of antisemitism:

“To accuse the Jews as a people, or Israel as a state, of fabricating or exaggerating the Holocaust.”

“Accusation of Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel or the supposed priorities of Jews worldwide than to the interests of their own nations.”

America’s First Amendment allows its citizens to hold uninformed, inaccurate, and vile opinions. Kyrie Irving may think the world is flat. Nick Fuentes can think that 1 million people died during the Holocaust. David Duke may think that some American Jews care more about Israel than America. Aaron Rodgers may think the COVID vaccines are ineffective.

We can’t start legislating what people are allowed to think. We can limit what people do, not what they think. Restrictions on thinking and speaking are un-American. These kinds of restrictions fuel bitterness, bigotry, and distrust. The restrictions create a slippery slope that eventually censors both subjects and individuals.

Wondering why most of the corporate media is ignoring Balenciaga and advertising that focuses on child sexualization? Because the elites have made friends, believing they know what stories the public can properly digest.

If they can use their multi-million dollar influencers to convince you that tweeting a movie poster is a hate crime worthy of censorship and suspension, then why can’t they conclude that child sexualization is a crime in the first place is not a crime?

It’s Voltaire: “Anyone who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.”

Controlling what we can say is a means of controlling what we think. Anyone who doesn’t understand the importance of protecting any speech, including speech we find objectionable, is an enemy of America.

And that might include some people that many of us respect.
