Former Florida Attorney General Chris Kise, who was part of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ transition team, has reportedly accepted a role on former President Donald Trump’s legal defense team.
The addition comes as the Justice Department’s investigation into the discovery of classified documents uncovered at Mar-a-Lago continues. On Monday, the DOJ announced in a legal filing that it had “identified a limited number of materials that may contain confidential information of attorneys and clients,” after US District Court Judge Aileen Cannon alluded to Trumps Request for the contribution of an external person may be granted. Special Master” to oversee the review of FBI evidence.
According to NBC News, Kise has won four cases in the US Supreme Court and several more in the Florida Supreme Court. He previously worked for the law firm of Foley & Lardner.
His profile page on the company’s website has since been removed. An unnamed source for the firm confirmed to Reuters that Kise, a former partner in the Tallahassee office, has resigned from the firm.
news week contacted the company for confirmation.
Kise previously made headlines by releasing information incriminating DeSantis 2019 Democratic gubernatorial opponent Andrew Gillum. Kise released documents and text messages to the media showing that Gillum accepted tickets to the Broadway show Hamilton by an undercover FBI agent he didn’t pay himself.
Kise has also represented several Republicans in legal capacities over the years.
When Kise was appointed Florida Attorney General in 2003, he was working under Charlie Crist, then a Republican and Florida Attorney General. Crist later served as the Democratic governor of Florida and is currently the Democratic gubernatorial nominee against DeSantis in the 2022 election.
“Chris is a 360-degree attorney: appellate, civil, criminal, state, federal — he can do it all,” former Senator George LeMieux, who was Crist’s chief of staff when Attorney General, told NBC News.
Trump has used social media to continually attack the DOJ, the FBI, and the ongoing investigation. On Truth Social on Aug. 29, he called for a “new election” because he says the FBI covered up information about President Joe Biden’s son Hunter Biden’s laptop days before the 2020 election.
Former attorneys who have represented Trump, including Michael Cohen and Alan Dershowitz, have tainted his legal defense in this case. Cohen claimed that Trump may have already “given away” information to hold America “hostage,” while Dershowitz said news week that the affidavit provided sufficient evidence for an indictment.
Andy McCarthy, a Fox contributor and editor for the National Reviewwas watching Your world with Neil Cavuto and said Trump “might persuade himself to be impeached.”
NBC News and Fox News reported that Kise is expected to begin his new role Thursday in federal court in West Palm Beach.
