RHOD Gilbert rose to fame in the noughties and has since become one of Britain’s leading comedians.
However, in 2022, the Welsh comedian revealed that he had stage four cancer.
Who is Rhode Gilbert?
Rhod Gilbert was born on October 18, 1968 in Carmarthen, Wales and is a comedian and television presenter.
He studied languages at Exeter University and after graduating spent eighteen months traveling around Australia and Asia.
He initially worked as an administrative assistant and market researcher before turning to comedy.
Rhod only started performing stand-up in 2002 after his girlfriend “constantly nagged” him.
At the age of 34, he won numerous talent competitions within a year and a half and was nominated for the Perrier Newcomer Award in 2005 for his first solo exhibition at the Edinburgh Fringe.
In 2006, he was named to The Times’ Top 50 Comedians.
Rhod bases most of his stories on real events and his life in the fictional Welsh village of Llanbobl.
He even wrote a sitcom about Llanbobl which was shown on BBC Radio 2.
What is Rhod Gilbert’s disease?
In July 2022, the comedian announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer.
He didn’t reveal what type of cancer it was when he shared the news at the time, but did reveal that he was being treated at a cancer center in Wales.
He said: “Although I never thought I would be a patient here, I know better than anyone that I am in the best possible hands.”
“The NHS care I receive is incredible. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone…but who knows, maybe I’ll come out the other end with a new stand-up show and a 40-minute rant about orange squash.”
In a message posted on his official Facebook page, he continued: “As a proud patron of Velindre Cancer Centre, I have traveled the world hosting chaotic quizzes and hosting star-studded comedy nights.”
“I have met and made friends with so many inspiring staff, patients and their families.
“It’s been a big part of my life for the last ten years.”
Rhod has since revealed that he has been diagnosed with metastatic cancer in the head and neck area.
How is Rhod Gilbert’s health now?
Since his diagnosis with head and neck cancer, Rhod has undergone extensive treatment.
He was treated at Velindre Cancer Center in Cardiff.
Because Rhod’s cancer was detected early, he was able to undergo surgery, followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy sessions.
Speaking about his first full scan in October 2023, he said Radio Times: “The best thing was that the tumor was gone and it was just a normal blood vessel again.”
What TV shows has Rhod hosted?
The comedian appears regularly on television and is best known for his comedy panel shows.
He appeared on Mock The Week, 8 Out of 10 Cats and Have I Got News For You and also presented Never Mind The Buzzcocks.
Rhod performed at the 80th Royal Variety Performance in 2008.
The Welshman also hosted his own shows Ask Rhod Gilbert, Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience and Rhod Gilbert’s Teen Tribes.
Work Experience saw the comedian try out various jobs across Wales, including mining, news reporter and paranormal investigator.
“Teen Tribes” explored the teenage tribal worlds of “Emos,” “Chavs,” and “Goths,” whereas “Ask” was a return to its comedic roots.
Between 2004 and 2005, Rhod served as a continuity writer for Paramount Comedy and also provided the end-credits voice acting for their prime time shows.
He was also a panellist on BBC One’s Would I Lie To You.
Rhod starred in the seventh season of Dave’s hit series Taskmaster alongside James Acaster, Jessica Knappett, Kerry Godliman and Phil Wang.
In 2020, he became the host of Comedy Central’s Rhod Gilbert’s Growing Pains.
In 2021, Rhod was a guest presenter on BBC’s DIY SOS: Children in Need 2021.
Then in 2023, after a health-related break from television, Rhod returned to television with a Channel 4 documentary about his battle with cancer.
Is Rhod Gilbert married and does he have children?
Rhod has been married to his wife Sian Harries since 2013.
Sian is an award-winning comedy writer whose works include Man Down and Tourist Trap.
She also wrote and directed the short film Neckface.
In June 2020, the couple launched a joint podcast “The Froth”.
They are also co-owners of the production company Llanbobl Vision.
The couple has no children.
