The UK has more than twice as many registered Labradors as the second most popular breed, while in the US they have been the number one every year since 1991.
With dog ownership soaring during the global pandemic and post-lockdown demand for four-legged friends remaining high, many of us will be considering a new puppy right now.
And although there are a whopping 221 different pedigree dogs to choose from in addition to numerous crossbreeds, the loyal Labrador has never been so in demand.
Here are 11 reasons why the Labrador Retriever makes such a perfect pet.

The Labrador’s ancestor, the St. John’s Dog, was used by fishermen to haul nets and fish out of the water – they did the arduous tasks simply to please their owners. This attribute has been passed down to the Labrador, making them perfect hunting dogs – retrieving rather than eating downed birds to keep their human happy. Pet Labs will do just about anything to please you and hate to let you down.

The combination of intelligence and joy makes the Labrador one of the easiest dogs to train without expensive obedience classes. Smarter dogs can be stubborn about learning new tricks on command, while many of the other docile breeds have a hard time understanding what you’re expecting of them.
