WandaVisionJac Schaeffer is responsible for the script and executive production. Additionally, Kathryn Hahn will reprise her lead role as Agatha Harkness.
Updated September 2023: This article has been updated to include new updates Agatha: Circle of Chaos.
Since her appearance in WandaVisionFans have been expecting to see more of Agatha Harkness in the MCU. While some were disappointed, she didn’t show up Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Marvel Studios clearly had bigger plans for her. Let’s see how well liked MCU series Loki And The Falcon and the Winter Soldier After expanding the audience’s knowledge of a supporting character, there’s a lot to be excited about in the upcoming series. These are some reasons to be happy Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.
We can explore Agatha’s point of view
Is Agatha really a villain or a victim of the circumstances in which she finds herself? There is no doubt that she is a witch accused of using dark magic to cast her own spells. She was even scheduled to be killed by her own mother and her Salem coven for this sin before turning her own magic against them, which in turn killed her. When she met Wanda, it was because she had been drawn to the chaos magic of the city Wanda had created, as it was the strongest magic Agatha had ever encountered.
At first, Harkness was very helpful to Wanda, helping her with dinner and looking after Wanda’s fictional children. However, it was later revealed that Agatha was the one who killed Sparky, the family dog, brought a fake version of Wanda’s brother Pietro to confuse her (and the audience), and helped make Vision suspicious of Wanda’s actions make. But was it really that bad? By forcing Wanda to face the truth, Harkness helps Wanda realize the full extent of her powers as the Scarlett Witch. And if Agatha hadn’t intervened, Wanda would still be holding about a thousand members of the town of Westview captive to have her own make-believe world.
Of course, Agatha will probably interpret the story this way. It will be interesting to see how Agatha escapes Wanda’s spell, which some might see as an unfair punishment to trap someone’s spirit in a prison like this without due process. Last but not least, Agatha is an entertaining villain, thanks largely to Hahn’s acting skills, so any story she tells will be fun.
Kathryn Hahn is the star of the show
It’s safe to say that Kathryn Hahn is always the right choice. Kathryn Hahn helped shape Agatha into the character she is on the show WandaVision, and it’s probably their popularity that inspired the studio to develop the new series in the first place. Similar to Falcon, Winter Soldier and Loki, the MCU’s popular supporting characters now get a chance to shine.
Hahn is no stranger to the world of big-budget films and series and has an impressive resume with dozens of memorable roles over the years. Fortunately, she has now earned the role as the leading actress and could easily carry this series forward. Much like Robert Downey Jr. in Iron Man, her star charisma is more than enough to earn this character A-list status.
New and returning characters
While not much has been confirmed about new characters in the series, there will inevitably be some. Specifically, it’s about Billy, Wanda’s son from WandaVision, who is also a member of The Young Avengers. Actor Joe Locke is also reportedly set to join the cast of the new show. Locke is said to play Wicca, better known as: WandaVision Fans as Billy, one of Wanda’s twin sons. Wicca is powerful, just like its mother. His powers allow him to manipulate reality, possibly hinting at Agatha’s true intentions.
Will she manipulate Billy by making him believe he can bring his brother back and use his powers for himself, like she tried to do with his mother? Maybe she really wants to train him. While nothing is certain at this point, the lineup of potential new characters is intriguing to say the least, especially considering the talented actors who will be playing them.
It could also be a setup for the return of Wanda Maximoff, aka The Scarlet Witch. The character seemed to die at the end Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Even though star Elizabeth Olsen doesn’t seem interested in returning any time soon, it’s hard to believe that Wanda is actually gone for good this early in the multiverse saga.
More music
WandaVision questioned the idea of what a Marvel project could be. Although it ended with a big CGI fight in the sky, starting the series as a sitcom mystery was a brilliant idea. Agatha will be a spin-off of sorts WandaVisionand while it’s unclear exactly how similar the projects might be, it only makes sense that the trend of challenging what a Marvel show can look like continues.
Agatha is catchy WandaVision The theme song “Agatha All Along” received huge fan praise as it was revealed who Agatha’s “Agnes” character really was. It became a viral hit and eventually the song won or was nominated for several high-profile awards. Since then, fans have been clamoring to see Hahn sing as a witch again. Agatha: Darkhold Diaries could be Marvel’s first musical.
Rogers: The Musical, an in-universe musical featured on the show Hawkeye, included the song “I Can Do This All Day.” It’s another example of a throwaway theme from a Marvel show that ended up being so popular with fans that a short musical was actually based on it and performed at Disney’s California Adventure Park. Obviously the demand is there. Actress Patti LuPone, who will play a fellow witch in the series, has promised fans plenty of singing. Maybe the next hit will be created that everyone will have in their head for days Agatha: Darkhold Diaries.
Discover more MCU history
While some backstory about Agatha has been explained, there is now an opportunity to go much deeper into revealing her past – should the series choose to do so. In the comics, Agatha lived in Salem, Massachusetts during the witch trials. After the trials were over, Agatha (the most powerful sorceress in the city) became the leader of New Salem. Agatha eventually has a son named Nicolas Scratch, and the town of New Salem later becomes home to the “Salem 7”, all of Harkness’s grandchildren. WandaVision already showed that she was alive during the Salem witch trial.
The previous title, “Coven of Chaos,” also seems to indicate that various witches and magic users will appear in the series. With Sasheer Zarnata confirmed for the role of Jennnifer Kale, it is very likely that not only Agatha’s story but also that of the witch community will be explored in the MCU.
This means Agatha Harkness has been around for almost 500 years, meaning there’s a good chance she’s clashed or crossed paths with many long-running Marvel characters. Is there a place where characters like the Eternals could show up again? She could have met characters like Wenwu, Namor, Loki, and even the new MCU villain Kang the Conqueror himself over the course of her many years.
Agatha could be crucial to the MCU’s expansion
While Agatha Harkness was a breakout character WandaVisionMany were confused as to why exactly Marvel Studios would give her an entire series. With so little space in the release schedule, what exactly made this character worthy of getting her own series, and how would this advance the larger MCU narrative? While plot mechanics should never be the main reason for a project and Marvel Studios has always focused on characters first, Agatha: Darkhold Diaries could actually be an important piece of the larger puzzle than many expect.
Marvel Studios has expanded its supernatural roster with characters like Moon Knight, Werewolf by Night, Man-Thing and Elsa Bloodstone. Agatha: Darkhold Diaries feels like the natural place to bring back many of these characters for cameo or supporting roles. Werewolf at night was a surprise hit for Marvel Studios, so they’ve probably tried to find a project to bring these characters back in, and this will make part of the MCU even more connected.
As a witch, Agatha could also have connections to characters like Doctor Strange and Wong. With Doctor Strange traveling with Clea trying to solve problems with the multiverse, Agatha or Wong may seek mutual aid and need to forge an alliance. Doctor Strange could also recruit Agatha to help him and Clea solve problems with the multiverse that could lead to this Doctor Strange 3 and the upcoming Avengers films. Agatha Harkness could be an important anchor figure for various supernatural characters.
A fun Halloween watch
The Disney+ MCU schedule has been pushed back quite a bit. echowhich was scheduled to premiere in November 2023, has been postponed to January 2024 What if…? Season 2 is scheduled to air around Christmas 2023. Now standard heart of steel And Daredevil: Reborn have been moved from the schedule. But remarkably so Agatha: Darkhold Diaries was kept on the release schedule but was given a fall 2024 premiere window, specifically around Halloween.
This is not surprising at all, as it would be obvious to air a series about witches just before Halloween. It lines up with how Disney has done it in the past, like in 2022. Hocus Pocus 2, another project based on an old witch played by a legendary comedienne, was released on September 30, 2022, giving it the entire month of October to build hype. Marvel Studios was also released Werewolf at night as a Halloween special on October 7, 2022. The studio is even rumored to have released it Haunted house hits theaters in July so it can be streamed on Disney+ in time for Halloween.
