Wild video shows man allegedly stealing yacht and crashing into boats in Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (KABC) – A man attempted to steal a 65-foot yacht in Newport Beach, according to authorities, and the wild scene was caught on video.

It happened near the Lido Island Bridge on Thursday morning.

The man, who fled for a brief moment, collided with several other boats and docks, causing severe damage before striking the bridge and seawall.

The harbor master said the key was in the ignition because the boat was being serviced.

According to the authorities, at least one person was injured.

Tyler Van Twist, who works in the area, spoke to ABC7 via Zoom on Thursday and said the noise of the incident startled him.

“The engines were so loud and we thought, ‘There’s no way a boat is going that fast in the harbor right now,'” he said. “He jumped on this yacht, he went into reverse, he did 360 turns in the harbor, so we filmed and said, ‘This guy’s going to hit something.'”

Port Police deputies arrested the man after the yacht was obstructed.

The incident is being further investigated.
