Well it’s official The Super Mario Bros. Movie is outside making numbers. Fans seem to be flocking to get a glimpse of this definitive Mario adventure, and we don’t blame them. With a stacked voice acting, stunning visuals, and a feel-good story, what’s not to like?

Illumination and Nintendo have worked incredibly hard to bring the animated world of Mario to life, but that hasn’t stopped fans from already demanding the re-release of another animated Mario story to the masses. Allow us to introduce you to the rarest Mario movie you have never seen; Excellent Mario Brothers: Grand Mission to Rescue Princess Peach.

Get a load of this title, we already love it. This 1986 anime is one of, if not the first, video game adaptation and is unlike anything ever filmed. Follow Mario and Luigi as they rescued, you guessed it, Princess Peach – a piece of media like this was certainly ahead of its time.

Animated by the now defunct Grouper Productions, Excellent Mario Brothers: Grand Mission to Rescue Princess Peach There was serious talent behind it. Directed by Masami Hata (Lilo & Stitch) and written by Hideo Takayashiki, there seemed to be no shortage of talent in the making of the film.

What ultimately prevented the film from gaining wide popularity was the purpose of its creation. Filled with animated product placement, Super Mario Brothers: Grand Mission to Rescue Princess Peach existed in many ways as a giant Nintendo ad. This story was created for promotional purposes and focused more on selling merchandise than commercial success.

That hasn’t stopped the film from gaining a cult following, however, as physical copies can be found online for hundreds of dollars. Luckily, no one has to pay that kind of money to catch a glimpse. Lots of well-meaning YouTubers posted the movie for free, and in just over an hour, this Mario and Co. story is the real deal.

So what are the odds that Nintendo will officially release this piece of forgotten video game lore? Sorry, but it is not good. The reality is that Nintendo has much bigger fish to fry before it can live up to the whims of the internet. Not to mention the fact that coming out with any sort of competing Mario ownership now probably wouldn’t bode well for their film’s box office numbers.

Regardless, we still have hope that Nintendo will one day do something with the jewel (say it with us); Super Mario Brothers: Grand Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!
