When Wordl First released to the public in October 2021, New York web developer Josh Wardle probably didn’t anticipate the global sensation it would become.
However, a year later, the game’s popularity shows little sign of waning.
part of WordlUndoubtedly, the appeal of lies in its simplicity, which means that it can be played by word puzzle veterans and beginners alike. Each day, the player must master a new five-letter word in six tries or fewer.
After each tip, the letters will light up, telling the player how accurate they were. When a letter turns green, it’s both in the word and in the right place. Yellow means the letter has features but not where you placed it, while gray indicates it’s not in the word at all.
Speak with news week in January, British native Wardle explained why his game is based on five-letter words.
He said: “There’s a reason each word is 5 letters long and you have 6 tries to guess it. This may seem arbitrary, but with the prototype version I tested different word lengths and experimented with the number of attempts players were allowed.
“Through this refinement process, I found that five letters and six tries is the ideal sweet spot. It’s just limited enough to feel challenging and thought-provoking, but more often than not people still manage to solve it. So, you feel a real sense of real accomplishment.”
In January Wordl was bought from the New York Timesalthough it’s still free to play.
Wordles The viral popularity has helped inspire a number of other word puzzles, including worldly and Nerd.
