World Cup final: Argentina beats France on penalties in Qatar

LUSAIL, Qatar — Argentina became world champions for the third time after beating holders France on penalties.

Substitute Gonzalo Montiel scored the winning penalty after a dramatic game at the Lusail Stadium north of Doha.

Argentina won the penalty shoot-out 4-2 after Kingsley Coman and Aurélien Tchouameni missed penalties for France.

Defending champions France meet Argentina in the World Cup final at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar.

Both teams are trying for the third time to win the biggest tournament in football. France won in 1998 and 2018.

Brazil was the last team to win back-to-back world titles in 1962. Argentina won the title in 1978 and 1986. Also in 2014 the Argentines lost in the final.

Lionel Messi is believed to be playing in his last World Cup and could win the ultimate prize for the first time if Argentina wins.

Argentina lead 2-0 over France at halftime in the World Cup final after goals from Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria.

Messi scored from a penalty in the 23rd minute after a foul on Di Maria. Thirteen minutes later, Di Maria ended a fluid team move with a deft swing from Messi.

Messi now has 12 World Cup goals – along with the Brazilian great Pelé – and is the first player to score in the group stage and in each round of the knockout stages in a single edition of the tournament.
