Not much has happened in Season 5 of Yellowstone so far. The last five episodes have covered quite a few topics, but if you had to describe this season to anyone, it boils down to this: John Dutton hates being governor; Beth regrets; and the occasional cowboy thing.” But by the end of Sunday night’s episode “Cigarettes, Whiskey, a Meadow and You,” we saw the wheels in the mind of John Dutton’s eldest adopted son Jamie (Wes Bentley) start turning, which me wonders: will Jamie Dutton do it? Murder someone again?
“Wait, did Jamie murder someone?” you ask. Don’t worry if you forgot, the series hasn’t exactly done anything to remind viewers. In Season 2, Jamie accidentally murdered New York Magazine journalist Sarah Nguyen (Michaela Conlin) and hired Rip (Cole Hauser) to make it look like Sarah decided one day to go kayaking…apparently in work clothes. Then, in Season 4, Jamie also executed his birth father, Garrett (Will Patton), to keep Beth from revealing John Garrett’s orchestration of the Dutton heist.
At the end of Sunday’s episode, as Jamie cuddles up with new-found galpal/possible corporate honey Sarah Atwood (Dawn Oliveri), the two watch a positive news report about John Dutton. Jamie tells Sarah that John is practically Teflon, leading to her response that the couple must make sure John doesn’t “show up to the fight” if Jamie decides to strip him of the governorship. Well, Sarah didn’t mention anything about murder, but Jamie seemed to take it to mean that John had to be removed. And considering that Jamie is a man who often does things based solely on emotion, it wouldn’t be surprising if some post-coital pheromones made him think he just had to be the man who raised him kill.
In the world of Yellowstone, the Duttons commit numerous crimes and the investigation seems nil, whether it’s because the Duttons own law enforcement or no one else in Montana notices. When Sarah Nguyen’s body is found, there is a newspaper article and nothing else. None of Sarah’s family members seem to care about her death. Hell, we’re never seeing her friend again. Death just happens and is another hack Beth can use against Jamie at a later date. And as for Garrett’s death, Season 5 started with absolutely no mention. No one has ever found Garrett’s body. Not even Jamie’s ex, Christina (Katherine Cunningham), who is also MIA this season, mentions the man’s absence.
We all love to laugh at the articles that routinely pop up asking how many people exactly the Duttons killed, but for now it just seems like sloppy storytelling. It’s hard to believe absolutely nobody would question the high mortality rate of this family, especially by a man who is now the state’s governor as well as its attorney general.
If Jamie tried to kill John, it might bring up past deaths at his hands, if only because Beth has the proof. I’m not holding my breath, but it sure seems like about time someone said, “Hey, remember when Jamie killed two people?”
“Yellowstone” airs Sunday nights on the Paramount Network.
