A royal expert believes Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should choose a path: either live the celebrity lifestyle or commit to royal life. The Sussexes can’t straddle both realms, particularly when seeking privacy, according to the expert, as it gets ‘tricky’.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have to make a choice between being royals or celebrities, says an expert
During a May 2022 episode of Royal usPR expert Lida Citroen discussed why Prince Harry and Meghan should choose between royalty and fame.
“I think they’re still trying to gain a foothold,” explained Citroen. “So they’re trying a lot of different things and some of them give them grip and some of them feel a little slippery … Some of them can also just try to figure out who they’re going to be in this world.”
She continued, “I don’t want to belittle what they’re going through, but from a perceptual standpoint, it feels like they have to decide if they’re a king or a celebrity. Because there’s a very different persona and perceptual mapping that goes with both — you can’t really straddle the two.”
Citroen weighed up why the Sussexes should make a final choice. “Sometimes you don’t get both,” she explained. “When you think about royal life and the pageantry of the institution, there are rules that come with it and there are protocols and there are rewards.”
She added: “But celebrities also have rules and protocols and rewards. It also has a lot of risks and it’s different to be managed – you know, to be managed is very different. I don’t know how they would find a way to bridge the two, but they have to make a choice somehow.”
Prince Harry may not be as comfortable with celebrity life as Meghan Markle
The PR expert also noted that Meghan may have understood celebrity culture, but it’s “not the same” as royal life.
“The responsibility, the loyalty, the protocol is different and so it would probably feel more natural for her… to want stardom [lifestyle]. There is a great risk associated with this,” said Citroen. “There are many treacherous landscapes. And maybe that’s something Harry isn’t too happy with because he grew up in a very different culture, which is the culture of the institution.”
She added, “I could see them almost being pulled in different directions — their rising stardom and he still felt the comfort of the institution but were drawn to the freedom that fame supposedly comes with.”
The pundit warns it can get ‘difficult’ for the Sussexes
Ultimately, Citroen shared: “It’s a decision they have to make.” She warned it has to be a solid choice or it will be difficult. “Once you open Pandora’s box, you can’t close it and say, ‘Well, now I can take my family private. Now I don’t want to see any pictures of me in public.’ That’s the celebrity load, right?” she explained.
The expert continued: “There are all these ways of being a celebrity’s reputation that you don’t have with the king or the institution. But the risk is that you can’t put it back and tell people now that there are things you don’t want to talk about. So when you open it, you have to get on with it somehow. And that’s where it gets really tricky.”
Citroen also pointed out how Prince Harry’s family ties play into the decision. “And from a family standpoint, I don’t think we can lose sight of the fact that Harry is still part of a family,” she said. “[Meghan] married into the family and was reportedly welcomed at first… But it’s still his family and it has to be emotional.”
