You know it’s that time of year when the “die hard” debate is thawed

The festive season brings with it a unique set of cultural highlights not found at any other time of the year. People wear ugly sweaters on purpose, consume eggnog like it’s going out of style, set up an ornate tree that takes pride of place in their home, listen to a certain set of songs that have been played over and over for decades, and discuss whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
Forget about Mariah Carey emerging from stasis to enjoy her inevitable stint in the spotlight, the Christmas festivities officially begin as John McTiernan’s all-time action classic begins to dominate the cultural conversation. As it should be, things are already heating up on social media.
A seemingly harmless tweet asking a question that has been asked literally a thousand times underscores how seriously people take the eternal discourse, as it has garnered nearly 20,000 likes and hundreds upon hundreds of replies since it was first posted.

So is Die Hard a Christmas movie? If you’re assuming that the holiday is above all an integral part of the plot, then of course, because John McClane wouldn’t be anywhere near Nakatomi Plaza if he hadn’t been invited to the party by his estranged wife. Of course, that’s just opinion, which means we’re relying on someone in the know instead.
None other than director McTiernan not only confirmed that Die Hard was indeed a holiday favorite, but he even went into detail as to why. As much as we love seeing the same argument over and over again, we will side with the person who started it.
