Young ‘Superman’ film written by James Gunn First film on DC Slate

Gunn and Peter Safran spoke to Ben Affleck about directing a DC movie.

The first film on DC Studios’ slate will be a new Superman film written by the studio’s new co-head James Gunn, Gunn announced Wednesday, but it won’t star Henry Cavill.

IndieWire has learned that the new Superman will focus on a young Clark Kent when he first arrives in Metropolis. There is no director attached yet.

Whether Henry Cavill will return as Superman because the film focuses on a younger hero, someone other than Cavill will be starring. Cavill himself confirmed the news on Instagram shortly after news of a new Superman movie broke, saying, “It’s my turn to wear the cape.”

However, IndieWire understands that Gunn and Safran have recently met with Cavill and the door is open for him to continue working with DC in the future. Additionally, Cavill has previously announced on Instagram that he will not defect, but has been fully sanctioned by Warner Bros. under a previous regime. However, it’s unclear what Cavill’s future role would be in DC Studios’ future.

Cavill isn’t the only meeting between Gunn and Safran. IndieWire also learned that Ben Affleck has met with Gunn and Safran about potentially directing a future DC film, although it’s unclear which project he would be involved with at this point.

Gunn and Safran recently met with Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav and outlined their entire plan, and they will now set about assembling a group of writers and directors for their various projects. They are expected to be ready in early January to reveal more details about the first chapter of films and TV projects under the DC Studios banner.

Looking ahead, in 2023 DC has released a handful of films that are still from a previous regime, including Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash with Ezra Miller, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. It’s unclear how or if any of these characters or storylines could affect DC’s future, but IndieWire understands that Gunn and Safran are still excited about the films, and each has their own surprises.

Superman movie news follows some other turmoil on the DC Studios side over the past few days, including IndieWire’s reporting that plans for Patty Jenkins-written Wonder Woman 3 weren’t moving forward at the studio and that Jenkins wasn’t willing to change her script. However, Jenkins has recently pushed back, saying in a statement on social media yesterday that she has not left the film and is willing to work with the studio.
